Svartalfheim Legendary Chests

Dec 22, 2023

Legendary Chests are coveted objects in God of War Ragnarok, as they contain items like Runic Attacks, Weapon Attachments, Amulet Enchantments and Resources. This page of IGN's Ragnarok guide details all the Legendary Chest locations in Svartalfheim, the second realm you can visit.

Since not all of Svartalfheim can be visited or looted upon the first visit, there will be inherent spoilers on the back half of this page. BE WARY OF SPOILERS!!

The sections on this page are ordered by when you can visit them earliest in the game.

Use the list below to jump to a specific region of Svartalfheim:

Found in an optional side area just after you lower the wall to pass North. Keep left and you may spot the Legendary Chest on a raised wooden platform. To get here, sail further along and spot a section you can slip the boat under.

Once through, dock the boat on the shore to your left, then jump up the wooden ledge on your left.

From here, head left to the far edge to find the Legendary Chest.

This Chest contains Deadly Obsidian Handles, Level 1 Handles that give 4 Strength.

The Legendary Chest in Modvitnir's Rig is almost impossible to miss, so long as you visit the area. From the beach, make your way up the ledge, kill the Wretches, leap up the ledge on your right, hit the plate with your Axe to open the door, then jump across the gap. From here you can climb left, around and up the tower. At the top, the Legendary Chest will be right in front of you.

This chest will reward you with one half of the Muspelheim Yggradsil Seed. Collecting both will let you travel to Muspelheim via Mystic Gateways!

The second Lore at Althjof's Rig can be accessed once you reach the furnace tower at the top of the rig. Here, face South and note two wooden barrels with Soundstone plates in the shade of the left-hand wall. Use Atreus’ Sonic Arrows to destroy them.

Shimmy around the corner here, then drop down the gold chain. Jump across the gap and you’ll return to the wheel that moves a grapple point. Use it to raise the grapple point as high as it will go.

Climb back up the gold chain, turn left, then use the grapple point to get across. Before you fall, grapple again to smash through a stone wall and into a small room. From here, grab the Scroll if you wish, then find the doorway on the right that goes back outside. At the end of the walkway is the Legendary Chest!

The Legendary Chest on Lyngbakr Island is a bit of a misnomer, because it's not actually located on the island itself. You’ll actually encounter it towards the end of The Weight of Chains Labor, where you’ll use a rope to zipline across to a distant clifftop. The Legendary Chest will be visible directly in front of you.

If you missed this Legendary Chest and need to return to it, look for the boat dock just East of Lyngbakr Island and moor there. Climb up the gold chain, then go through the doorway on your right. The Legendary Chest will be visible to your left.

The Chest will contain a Rond of Aggravation. It boosts your Defense, Vitality and Luck, and has a high chance of giving a Rage Burst when parrying, making it a great first Rond for early in the game.

This Legendary Chest is found towards the end of the Jarnsmida Pitmines area, in the battle area where Sindri gives Kratos and Atreus new sources of light, just after Kratos shifts a cart to the side. To start, stand where the cart is and face forwards into the cave: here, make a wide U-turn to your right.

Here you should spot a pillar holding up the water trough with gold segments: use the Blades of Chaos to turn the end of the trough, which will cause a giant crate holding a stone block to move towards you. While it's doing this, use the explosive pot to your left to destroy the gold rocks, letting you leap up to the crane's stone block once it's in position.

Once you’re on top of the stone block, throw the Leviathan Axe into the end of the trough: this blocks the water flow, making the crane move you to its original starting position.

When the stone block has finally stopped moving, you can have Kratos hang off the side of the stone black and then leap over to a new area.

From there, follow the mine cart tracks uphill: the Legendary Chest will be at the top on your right, close to an Artifact.

The chest contains the Pommels of the Undying Spark, which has +6 Strength, +3 Runic, and has Scorching Burn, which increases the damage the Burn status inflicts.

This Legendary Chest can be found after you pick up your first Relic in the flooded room. The final Artifact in the Things Left Behind set is found after you pick up your first Relic in the flooded room. Shuffle through the crack in the wall, then destroy some hanging Soundstone rocks with Sonic Arrows so you can grapple to the other side. Once you’ve done this, you’ll walk through a curved wooden walkway.

At the end of the wooden walkway, turn left and grapple across the gap, then turn left again and drop down into the lower area. Go through the door on your right to enter the room with the Legendary Chest. However you’ll have to fight and defeat the Draugr Hole before you can open it.

The chest contains the Fortified Frost Knob for your axe. With 4 Strength and 5 Cooldown, it's a good replacement for The Furious Maul if you don't intend to upgrade that. It also has the Frost Resolve Perk, boosting Defense and Stagger Resistance when you use Frost Awaken.

All of the Legendary Chests below can only be acquired later in the game with new equipment. As such, BEWARE OF SPOILERS!!

This Legendary Chest is found on the Northern end of The Applecore, however you cannot return that way until you complete the Forging Destiny main quest, giving you a new piece of equipment.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to begin the lengthy process of returning to The Applecore and progressing through it. Return to The Applecore by going to the Mystic Gateway in the Aurvangar Wetlands, then take the ferry that goes North-West to the Sverd Sands. Here you’ll find the elevator back into The Applecore.

Once you’re down here, look for the Rope Frame you can now use to create a shortcut. Ride the zipline down to the bottom, then continue North through the tunnel.

When you round the corner, you’ll see a high wall with a Wind Vent on the side. Use your new equipment to plug it up, then climb up the wall to the top.

At the top, head forward and you’ll see a large boulder with a yellow Wind Fissure on it. Throw your new equipment into it and then detonate it with the Triangle button, destroying the boulder.

Head forward and then right, then use the grapple point to cross the gap and climb up the ledge. Head through the tunnel, then kick the chain down at the end so you can slide down to the next room.

From this room, head left through the crawlspace, then out the other side, go through the double doors on your right.

Here in this room, look to your right for a spot on the wall you can shimmy across, then head down the hallway.

On the other side, veer left and cross over the gap with the grapple point, onto the spiral walkway.

As you go down the spiral walkway, keep an eye out on your right for a gap in the fence, with two rope-chains flanking it. Kick down the metal plate if you need to, then drop down below.

Here, head forward and take a right: jump across the gap, then slip under the wooden trough (if you never took this route before, you’ll have to destroy some gold rocks by going left first and blowing up the Red Pot).

On the other side of the trough, use the grapple point on your left to cross over the blue-lit gap, then leap up to the top of the ledge on your right. There, go through the double doors.

Next, look around on your left for a Wind Vent, close to a ledge you can mount up. Instead of doing that, head to the right-hand side of this area and use your new equipment to plug up the vent. You can then swing across the gap.

Once you cross the gap, head down the hallway directly ahead: there’ll be a Mystic Gateway here, and a normal metal gate that Kratos can lift up.

On the other side, you’ll have to fight a Wicked Grim, a Wretch, and a Wild Wretch. After defeating them, return to the doorway and face North: head left and then slip through the crawlspace.

On the other side of this tunnel, leap up to the top of the wall on your left. Head down the bend, and you’ll be back at the main entrance to The Applecore from the Jarnsmida Pitmines.

From this spot, head right, but keep an eye out for the Rune Slate on your left. Carve the rune into it, and a wall will open up with the Legendary Chest behind it!

The chest contains the Banahogg Knob, which increases Kratos’ bare-handed damage for a duration after he throws the Axe.

This Legendary Chest is found in the puzzle where you have to raise a gate by pulling a chain, then using the Axe to freeze a gear so you can pass through. This occurs after Sindri tries to talk to Kratos, and you have to push a cart out of the way.

Instead of opening the gate with the chain, stand at the chain, face away from the gate towards an intersection, then go right. Here will be some Red Fungi Bramble: burn it down with a Hex and Blazing Surge combo, then head forward to the chest!

The chest contains the Fog of Fimbulwinter, a Heavy Runic Attack for the Leviathan Axe. This fires a wide wave of ice that deals massive Frost damage, freezing practically anything in its path!

While you pass by The Forge during your initial visit to Svartalfheim, you won't be able to access this Legendary Chest until you begin the Forging Destiny main quest.

Once you do, you’ll be solving a puzzle by trying to plug up two geysers at once in order to open a gate (to do this, freeze the left-hand geyser with the Leviathan Axe, then ask your companion to turn the crank and manually plug up the right-hand one). Once you’ve done this, head through the open gate and the chest will be right in front of you.

The chest contains the Atlas Eruption Heavy Runic Attack for the Blades of Chaos. This causes explosions in the ground around Kratos that ends with an explosive shockwave, sending enemies flying. The downside is that this leaves Kratos wide open to anyone outside the attack's initial range.

This Legendary Chest is found just before you enter the tunnel in Alberich Hollow via the giant walkway on Dragon Beach. From the huge dwarf statue, head left downhill and you’ll have to fight some Cursed Grims and a Bergsra.

Once they’re down, note the Legendary Chest on the right-hand wall encased in gold rock. Look for a lava rock dispenser ahead and on the left-hand wall: grab one and chuck it at the gold rocks to free the chest!

The chest contains half of the Muspelheim Yggdrasil Seed. If you haven't already, go to Modvinir's Rig on the Western side of this bay to collect the other half: that’ll let you travel to Muspelheim!

The one piece of Lore in Alberich Hollow is found at the Northern end of the tunnel. After you fight and defeat a Grim called Ormstunga, you can go under a fallen rock pillar and find a wall of gold rocks. To destroy it you’ll need a lava rock, but you can't pass under the fallen rock pillar whilst holding one.

To solve this, backtrack a bit back down the tunnel and look for the lava rock dispenser on your left. Grab a rock, return to the fallen rock pillar, but this time vault up the ledge on your left.

Here on your right you’ll have a view of the gold rocks: throw a lava rock at them to destroy them!

With that done, pass back under the fallen rock pillar and then make your way to the end of the tunnel. The Legendary Chest will be here on the left.

In addition to 5,000 Hacksilver, the chest also has a Folkvangr Whetstone, which you can use to upgrade your companion's sword.

This Legendary Chest is found on Alberich Island, however you cannot get to it until you complete the Forging Destiny main quest and pick up a new piece of equipment.

Once you’ve done this, return to Alberich Island's main beach, then look for the Wind Vent on the right-hand wall: use your new equipment on it, then climb up the wall to the top.

Here, head right up the wooden ramp to the top of an elevator, but the lift is down at the bottom. To raise it, fire a Sonic Arrow at the Soundstone rock on your left, then head through and right down the wooden ramp.

At the bottom, look right towards the elevator, and you can see a rock with a Wind Fissure on it: throw a Draupnir Spear at it and then detonate it, allowing the geyser to flow and raise the lift.

Head on over to it and use the grapple point to make it onto a wooden platform.

Now that you’re on the platform, you need to get up to the top of the island via another geyser-powered lift. Freezing it will lower the lift, but the geyser is protected by a metal barrier you have to lower. To start towards fixing this, face the island, then use the grapple point on your left.

Once you’re over there, vault up the ledge, then turn around. You’ll be able to see a large rock with a Wind Fissure on it: throw a Draupnir Spear into it, then blow it up to destroy the rock.

From here, head around the corner to find a chain crank: use it to lower the barrier around the geyser. Next, look for a yellow gear on your right (if you can't see it, you didn't destroy the rock!). Place a Hex Bubble on the yellow gear, then throw the Leviathan Axe at it to freeze it: the Hex Bubble will retain the freeze for several seconds once the axe is removed, so you’re safe to leave and continue.

With that in place, return to the wooden platform and go to the left side, where you can see the exposed geyser. Aim at the base of the geyser, then quickly recall the Axe and throw it at the geyser before the Hex Bubble expires. This will lower the lift, allowing you to grapple over to it!

Once you’re on the lift, recall the Axe and the lift will automatically raise back up again. At the top, you’ll have to defeat several Cursed Wretches before you can move on.

Once the Wretches are dead, face West and look for the grapple point on the opposite wall, below the wooden building. Use it to get to the top of the island, and the Chest will be directly ahead!

The chest contains a Jewel of Yggdrasil, which you can use to repair a socket in Kratos’ enchantment amulet.

The Legendary Chest in Nidavellir is visible from your first visit, however you cannot actually reach it until much later in the game. You’ll know when you return to Svartalfheim and have picked up a new piece of equipment.

Once you’ve acquired it, return to Nidavellir and go to the end of the sewer passage you originally used to get from the marketplace with the Odin statue to the Eastern side of town. Face North, then run North up the main road to a square with a well in the middle.

Here, check the back-right corner for a Wind Vent you can throw your new equipment into. Use it to climb to the upper area: the Legendary Chest will be here on your left.
